WEST HOLLYWOOD – It’s not just the heat wave that’s causing things to sizzle in West Hollywood. In celebration of September as National Literacy Month, the City of West Hollywood has launched WeHo Reads: Noir,exploring all things Noir with a series of Saturday events.
On Saturday, September 27, 2014, things heat up with WeHo Reads: A Day of Noir. The daylong event will celebrate the quintessential Southern California literary theme of Noir with visual/interactive art, live music, author panels, theatrical performances, and food trucks. The event will take place from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at West Hollywood Library and Park, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Following the daytime events, there will be an outdoor sunset movie screening ofWho Framed Roger Rabbit at 7:15 p.m. All WeHo Reads: Noir events are free and open to the public.
Additional highlights of WeHo Reads: A Day of Noir will include:
• Charles Phoenix Retro Southern California Slide Show — Pop culture humorist and author Charles Phoenix will super-charge the classic living room slide show into a laugh-out-loud extravaganza of Southern California’s colorful car culture, spectacular space age suburbia, flashy fast food stands, sensational shopping centers, delightful drive-ins, glamorous local landmarks, and much more! • “I Wake Up Screaming,” a special Noir edition of Write Club Los Angeles presented by Bootleg Theater — In three rounds, two opposing writers will face off on contrasting topics in this very special WeHo Reads: Noir edition, dueling in the literary theme and vein of Noir. There will be seven minutes on the clock and the audience will pick the winner.
• WordTheatre — WordTheatre joins WeHo Reads: Noir in a special hour of deception and betrayal with a twisted Janet Fitch story (“The Method”) read by Sarah Clarke (“The Twilight Saga,” “24”).
Two musical groups will perform on the East Lawn of West Hollywood Park: the Dale Fielder Quartet will perform jazz standards through a grant provided by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and Jet Set Quintet will present songs from the Great American Songbook. Artist/poet Brian Sonia-Wallace, also known as ‘RENT Poet’ will write poems for the public in exchange for whatever buyers decide they are worth.
WeHo Reads: A Day of Noir will feature also several family-friendly activities including several craft tables, a “Snap Yourself!” photo booth featuring Noir inspired props, and a special children’s Noir theatrical performance by Rogue Artists Ensemble based on Edward Gorey’s Gashleycrumb Tinies and other Noir tales.
On-site food options will include Dogtown Dogs and A Rockin Ice food trucks, as well as Jones Coffee.
